Use Tools in Unexpected Ways, AI Too

Published on

When I worked as a graphic designer, I loved using tools or objects in ways they weren't originally intended for. For example, making drawings by colouring Excel spreadsheet cells or writing text with yellow electrical tape.

The other day, while testing the MCP I developed to integrate Figma with Claude, my 9-year-old daughter asked me what I was doing. I explained it to her and she listened carefully. When I finished, she said:
"Tell it to draw an angry monster."
I asked Claude to do it, and it drew one.

I've been using AI intensively in my work for some time now, and one of the things I've realised is that you shouldn't stop yourself from asking for something just because you think it can't do it. Just ask anyway—you'll see how often it will surprise you with the proposed solution and you'll learn something new.

Today, whilst working with Figma + Cursor, I remembered my daughter and asked the agent to draw a dragon.

I think I'm going to return to the hobby I had when I was a designer 😊
